Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. ("Britannica") is committed to respecting the privacy of visitors to its family of Web sites.

The Britannica Store site is now powered by Shopify

Personal Information.  Shopify collects Personal Information that you provide to Shopify through the Britannica Store, such as your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and credit card number. Shopify uses Personal Information to process and fulfill your order.  Shopify may share with Britannica your name, mailing address, phone number, email address if you make a Britannica Store purchase, but will not share your credit card information with Britannica. 

Non-Personal Information. Shopify also collects non-personal information from you, such as your browser type, and your Internet protocol (IP) Address ("Non-Personal Information"). Non-Personal Information cannot be easily used to personally identify you.  Shopify uses Non-Personal Information to track, evaluate, and improve the use of its store services. 

Data Security.   Shopify complies with industry standards of data security, and will transfer your credit card information to payment processor Authorize.Net only in an encrypted form.   However, Shopify, Authorize.Net, and Britannica cannot guarantee the security of your Personal Information, and do not assume any liability for any disclosure of data due to errors in transmission, unauthorized third party access or other acts of third parties, or acts or omissions beyond their reasonable control.

Cookies.  Shopify uses “Cookies” to make your shopping experience easier on Shopify.com & myshopify.com.  “Cookies” are small files that Shopify transfers to your hard drive for record-keeping purposes. One of the primary purposes of Cookies is to provide a convenience feature to save you time. For example, Cookies allow Shopify to recognize you when you re-enter the Britannica Store so that you will not have to log in each time you visit.  Cookies also allow us to collect anonymous traffic data, such as the number of unique and return visitors who use the Britannica sites.  If you prefer, you can reset your browser to notify you when you've received a Cookie or, alternatively, to refuse to accept Cookies. It is important to note that you may not be able to use certain features on a Britannica site if you choose not to accept Cookies. The use of Cookies is an industry standard and occurs at most major Web sites.

Data Sharing.  As Asset.  Shopify may consider your Personal Information to be an asset that will be transferred in the event of a merger or acquisition of Shopify or its assets. You will be notified via email or by a notice on Shopify’s web site of any such change in ownership or control of your Personal Information.  Similarly, Britannica may transfer your Personal Information in the event of merger or acquisition, but will notify you first.  To Third Parties.  Shopify will disclose your Personal Information to payment processor Authorize.Net and any other third party who needs to know your Personal Information so that your order can be processed.   Shopify and Britannica may also disclose your Personal Information to prevent an emergency, to prevent harm to others, to respond to legal requirements, to protect or enforce its rights, to protect or enforce the rights of a third party, or as required or permitted by law (including, without limitation, to comply with a subpoena or court order). 

Communications from Shopify.   Shopify may communicate with you regarding your transactions in the Britannica store.

Protection for Children.   Children should always ask parents for permission before providing any Personal Information to Britannica or purchasing any products or services from Britannica. Britannica expressly adheres to all laws and policies related to children's privacy. Britannica does not knowingly collect or solicit Personal Information from or about children under 16, except as permitted by law. If we discover we have received any Personal Information from a child under 16 in violation of this policy, we will delete that information immediately. If you believe Britannica has any Personal Information from or about anyone under 16, please contact us in the manner provided for below.

Data Retention. Britannica retains your information for as long as necessary to permit us to use it for the purposes that we have communicated to you and comply with applicable law or regulations.

Your Consent and Changes to Privacy Policy. This Britannica Store Privacy Policy was updated on December 9, 2011. By using this site, you consent to the collection and use of your information by Britannica in the manner specified in this Privacy Policy.  Britannica reserves the right to change or amend this Privacy Policy prospectively at any time by posting the revised Privacy Policy.  We encourage you to periodically review this Privacy Policy to be informed of how we are protecting your information.
